What is a Bequest?
A bequest — a gift made through your will or living trust — is one of the easiest, simple and popular ways to achieve your financial goals and benefit the Genealogy Society of East Alabama. It costs you nothing during your lifetime because it takes effect when you die. Plus, it's "revocable," so you can update or change it if circumstances change. If you already have a will or living trust, you can amend it to include a bequest to GSEA with a simple codicil. No other planned gift is as simple to make or as easy to change should you ever need the assets during your lifetime. Why Making Bequest to GSEA Might be Right for You
- You want to make a gift to the GSEA.
- You want the flexibility to change your mind.
- You want continued access to your wealth, should you need it.
- You are concerned about circu9mstances changing.
Be mindful that bequests are affected by tax laws that have changed substantially over the years. An estate planning profeesional can advise you on the best options tax-wise for you, your estate and your heirs.
How to Make a Bequest to GSEA
To make a charitable bequest, a donor has to allocate a portion of their estate to a nonprofit in their legal will. They are usually allocated in three ways:
-
A specific amount of cash (i.e. $10,000) or a percentage of the donor's total estate (i.e. 10% of an estate of $1 million would be $100,000 to charity); or
-
The remaining value of the estate after all other bequests have been paid.
-
All or a portion of your estate to be transferred to charity only if a named beneficiary predeceases you.
