This Society is a non-profit corporation. Since its beginning in 1963, the Society has served a five-county area of east central Alabama, which includes Chambers, Lee, Macon, Russell, and Tallapoosa. Each quarter since 1963 – in July, October, January, and April - the Society has published a quarterly journal called Tap Roots. Within the five-county area, over 600 cemeteries have been enumerated and published in Tap Roots and/or special editions. Also, more than 600 records such as family Bible records and church histories have been included. Many old newspaper articles have been reprinted. The earliest marriage records for Chambers, Lee, Russell, and Tallapoosa Counties have been published. Many articles regarding the Civil War have been published, and the muster rolls of soldiers from this area have been enumerated.

The Society has worked hard to preserve the rich history of the area. Members can share pride in what has been accomplished, but should be ever mindful of the enormous job yet to be done. The Genealogical Society of East Alabama, Inc. promotes the sharing of genealogical information. If you are a paid researcher who collects fees from clients for your research services, please disclose this fact when requesting information.
